Dr. Kar’retta Venable, 2016 Alum of Howard University, is an environmental and atmospheric research data scientist, software developer, technical writer, presenter, educator, STEAM community activist, First Aid/CPR instructor, music producer and entrepreneur thriving to spread knowledge and information to the public.

Because of Dr. K’s passion for protecting people from environmental hazards and providing educational resources over the past 25 years, she created the Venable’s Education and Training Services (V.E.T.S.), to provide First Aid CPR training and educational activities related to science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) educational outreach services. Her passion to engage and foster the next generation of scientists has lead her to support the advancement of K-12 and post secondary students with tools to accelerate and optimize their scientific educational matriculation and careers. Furthermore, Dr. K specializes in providing assistance to students with learning disabilities providing the necessary skills and tools to advance their educational path.

Currently, she is a Physical Scientist/Watershed Coordinator with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development's (ORD) Center for Environmental Measurement and Modeling developing mitigation tools for wildfire hydrology and green infrastructure to protect water resources. Additionally, she develops software for sediment fate and transport within hydrologic systems. Her specialties in research are on aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions, extreme climate events, wildfire science, water quality and sustainability, the hydrologic cycle and flow regimes, geo-spatial analysis, data science, and environmental and atmospheric interactions.
Dr. K also served two consecutive terms as a commissioner with the Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission in Columbus, GA. She continues to reach audiences of all demographics to spread knowledge pertaining to environmental equality and sustainability through continuous public speaking events, scientific conferences, networking, and community activism.

A former professor at Columbus State University and Columbus Technical College within the Earth and Space Sciences and General Studies Departments for 2017 – 2019, has taught over 1200 students of all ages over the past 20+ years and countless others through her Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) educational outreach and advocacy. In her additional time, she provides mentorship, college prep, and tutoring for K-12 and postsecondary students. Because of her passion for protecting people from environmental hazards and providing educational resources, she also developed a business called The Venable’s Education and Training Services (V.E.T.S.), to provide First Aid CPR training. As a life long learner, she strives to continue her education and data science and programming.
While at Howard, she completed a research fellowship supported by the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) with the Johns Hopkins University Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering. This enthusiastic interdisciplinary environmental scientist also holds a B.S. in Geology and a M.S. in Environmental Science from Columbus State University.
